The city of Oxford is, of course, best known around the world for the University of Oxford, which dates back to the 11th century. Almost every British prime minister since World War II studied at Oxford, as have a number of other world leaders such as Bill Clinton, Benazir Bhutto, Lester B. Pearson, and Aung San Suu Kyi. Other major figures associated with Oxford include scientists Stephen Hawking, Edwin Hubble, Albert Einstein, and Adam Smith; writers Oscar Wilde, J.R.R. Tolkien, and T.S. Eliot; composers John Taverner, William Walton, and Andrew Lloyd Webber; and philosophers Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. The University of Oxford has been consistently ranked among the top 10 universities in the world, especially for disciplines such as medicine, law, business, history, politics, and anthropology. A total of 28 Nobel laureates are alumni of Oxford, and the university is also known for the Rhodes Scholarship, one of the world's oldest international postgraduate awards.

In addition to its prominence in education, the city of Oxford has a strong and diversified economy. The manufacturing, publishing, and technology industries are among the most vibrant sectors of the local economy. Morris Motors, a British car manufacturing company now owned by BMW, has been building automobiles in the area since 1919. The city is also home to Oxford University Press (one of the world's most prestigious publishers) as well as several smaller publishing houses. A variety of tech start-ups have been founded in Oxford, such as Digital Oxford, Labstep, and Brainomix, and the presence of students at the University of Oxford has attracted various types of private-sector education companies (including Manhattan Review). Oxford residents also enjoy a rich cultural life, with numerous theatres and cinemas in addition to a strong popular music scene. At Manhattan Review, we approach living and working in this world-class city with a mixture of reverence, enthusiasm, and humility.
